The Malta Bend American Legion Post No. 558 now has a life-saving device on site as post members prepare to welcome back the public.

Post Adjutant Steve Olson said there was considerable applause from the members Monday evening, May 17, when Post member David Roscher presented a portable, user-friendly Automated External Defibrillator — or AED. Roscher and his wife, Sharon, donated the device for emergency use at the building.

Olson stated members brought up multiple stories regarding past uses of AEDs to save someone else’s life.

Donors David and Sharon Roscher felt it was important to have this life-saving device on site, particularly when large groups of people are gathered there.

“First Vice Commander Bill Eidson mentioned a case while on the job in Texas, where the person sitting next to him fell over,” Olson noted, quoting Eidson. “’If not for the AED in the space, that co-worker would not be with us today.’”

Roscher pointed out that with large numbers of older individuals who frequent Saturday night Bingo at the post, this is certainly a necessity to have on hand. He went on to make the observation that given, in general, the older age range of the average post member, this device would be important most any time the building is occupied.

Olson thanked Roscher for his generosity and said he will have the AED prepared, installed and ready to go for the re-opening of Malta Bend Bingo on June 5.

“With an ambulance easily 10 minutes away from the building, this will be a very important medical asset if the emergency arises,” Olson stated.
