Columbia Memorial Hospital (CMH) is pleased to present the funds to purchase two automatic external defibrillators to two Clatsop County organizations. Bergerson Construction and Cannon Beach Conference Center (CBCC) won the Heart Month AED contest held in February by describing how having an AED would help their organization.

Bergerson Construction is a marine construction company based in Astoria. They frequently complete projects on the water, in difficult-to-access areas, making it difficult for emergency personnel to reach them quickly.

“Having an AED onsite would allow our employees to provide lifesaving measures in the event of a heart attack, while awaiting the arrival of emergency personnel,” they wrote in their application. “We all know that time is of the essence during a heart attack, and we would appreciate the opportunity to provide that chance of survival to our remote area employees.”

CBCC is a nonprofit, Christian conference and retreat center located in Cannon Beach. They serve a wide range of guests each year, including families, retirees and elderly people.

“We are blessed by this prize,” said Kevin Craig, director of retreats and operations. “It will be very helpful to have an AED in our recreation center.”

CBCC and Bergerson were chosen as the winners by the leadership of the WomenHeart group that meets every month to support women who have or are at-risk for heart disease. More than 10 entries were received in the contest.

Both organizations will receive checks for $1,300 to purchase their own AED units. This is the second year CMH has held the contest.
