LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. — Lawrence County EMA has been awarded nearly $10,000 to expand access to automated external defibrillators at senior centers across the county.
Lawrence County EMA Director Steven Carlton briefed the Lawrence County Commission during Tuesday's work session about the grant, awarded through the North Alabama Council of Governments.
The funding will provide eight complete AED kits, including the defibrillator, wall-mounted cabinet, signage and identification markings.
Seven of the AEDs will be placed at each of Lawrence County's seven senior centers. The eighth will be available for use elsewhere in the county.
The project began after Carlton met with Lawrence County Aging and Transportation Director Robbi Ligon earlier this year to discuss needs at the county's senior centers and ways EMA could help improve emergency preparedness.
The AEDs have been ordered and will be installed once they arrive.
Local fire departments are also helping with the project. Caddo Midway Fire and Moulton Fire Rescue have offered to train senior center staff and volunteers on how to use the AEDs and respond during a cardiac emergency.
“This project is a great example of what can happen when we identify a need and bring the right partners together to find a solution,” said Lawrence County EMA Director Steven Carlton. “Our goal is not only to provide the equipment, but to make sure the people who may be called upon to use it have the training and confidence to do so.”
“During my first year as director, one of my priorities has been actively pursuing opportunities to bring additional public safety grant funding into Lawrence County. By identifying needs, building partnerships and pursuing outside funding, we can strengthen public safety resources while limiting the financial impact on the county. This AED project is a great example of that approach.”
Carlton thanked State Rep. Ernie Yarbrough, Caddo Fire Chief Darwin Clark and NARCOG Director Robbi Cantrell for their assistance in securing the grant.
He also recognized Ligon and Lawrence County Aging and Transportation for working with EMA to identify the need and develop the project.
